[Travel / Adventures] 071. Visit Houston (part 3)

Posted in 30 Day Habits at 10:02 pm by Heather

Part 1 is here
Part 2 is here

Saturday dawned a little later than Friday, which was lovely.  After some coffee and chatting with April’s folks, we headed out to the mall with the top down, so that we can run some errands and also I would be able to takes the CHIKIN for the first time.  Yes, it’s true, I had never eaten at Chick-Fil-A, and was amazed at the line for the place.  I mean, the chicken is fantastic, but hey.  I might have a different tune if I had one nearby.

April got her nails done, and I resisted the siren call of the cupcakes (which were TEXAS sized), and we then went to Charming Charlies, which is a fantastic little store that sells just accessories.  And the lovely part is that everything is sorted by color.  I found a bunch of lovely pieces that I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on already.

The other weird thing we ran into was The Strangest Mediterranean Festival EVER.  You’d think such a fest would have hummus and gyros, and perhaps some baklava.  No evidence of that, but we did have the option for Tamales, BBQ, and Kettle Corn.  Is there a Mediterranean Texas that I’m missing?

And then it was time to go home and prepare for birthday dinner at Benihana’s…

… to be continued

[30 DAY HABITS] 075. Blog daily

Posted in 30 Day Habits at 9:22 pm by Heather

Its a good thing that its a Sunday night Bears game versus in the afternoon.  My massage therapist is there right now and her take on it was “well at least we can get into a state of mind where we don’t care that the game is going to be ginormously bad” (ok, that’s paraphrased but you get the point.

[30 DAY HABITS] 075. Blog daily

Posted in 30 Day Habits at 10:16 pm by Heather

Today was better than yesterday, and I managed to get my laundry picked up and books set for the trip, but it’s just been crazy and I’ve been exhausted.

I was going to post my Houston trip pictures, but sleep seems like a better option at this point.

[30 DAY HABITS] 075. Blog daily

Posted in 30 Day Habits, For Me at 7:30 pm by Heather

If I didn’t have the challenge of posting 30 days this month, I’d definitely pass today.

I’d like to say that I did a lot, but I forgot to set my alarm, and woke up at 7:50 am when I had an 8 am meeting.  The only saving grace is I work from home so the commute was short enough to make it.

I manage to grab a luna bar and dammit if my teeth don’t HURT again.

Then 10 minutes before my next meeting my lip starts annoying me, like a wire is stuck out on the braces.  I go to the mirror, and no wire, but the bracket has done a 180 so the adhesive is on the outside.  A couple MacGuyver tricks later, I had the bracket oriented the right way and made the call to the orthodontist and got an appointment for 11:45 am.

… of course it is raining, and there is construction and they close the inbound express lanes at 11:15 am so traffic SUCKS.  Let me tell you – there is NO NEED to close it that early, the outbound traffic is always light until about 2 pm. UGH.

So I’m already late, I get to the parking garage at 11:45 when I’m supposed to be in the chair, and … there’s NO PARKING.  I don’t find this out until I get to the top where the (luckily free) valet is, but they’re behind and no one seems to be around.   I get my big girl pants on and find someone and give them my keys and run in.

And the bracket comes off – it was on a crown and while they did the magic “rough up the crown treatment” for my front two teeth, for some reason they didn’t do it on this one.  So they took the bracket off.  Turns out I DON’T NEED IT ON THIS TOOTH YET.

At least cosmos are $5 at the bar tonight…

[30 DAY HABITS] 075. Blog daily

Posted in 30 Day Habits at 7:15 pm by Heather

Wow – this is just a quick update before I run off to a pub crawl – this blogging daily thing is harder than I thought!

I still have to write up my Houston trip, and I’ve taken Wrigley to the dog park twice this month to make up for my forgetfulness last month…

More to come!

[30 DAY HABITS] 083. Meditate daily

Posted in 30 Day Habits at 11:59 pm by Heather

My second 30 day habit is complete – much more of a success than the decluttering in the completion scorecard. And, surprisingly, this one wasn’t too hard, although as soon as the challenge was over, I have dropped the habit, which is a little saddening, because it really was a good habit – IS a good habit.  I feel more relaxed and peaceful when I meditate in the morning, and I’m unsure why those good habits are the ones that are so easy to drop.  And really, there’s no reason why I can’t just keep up that habit…

[30 DAY HABITS] 075. Blog daily

Posted in 30 Day Habits at 11:18 pm by Heather

This month’s challenge – in honor of NaNoWriMo, is to take on the NaBloPoMo challenge – 1 post a day for 30 days.

And wow, it’s harder than I expected.  I’ll admit that this is somewhat of a cheater blog post as work got so insanely nutty, and I had a dinner ramble to go to early that got me home late.  And again in the sense of being honest, I totally forgot when I came home at 11:30 pm to write up that night’s blog post!

But I’m learning to accept that we’re all human, and we’re all allowed a little slip once in a while, so instead of throwing this out entirely, I will happily use the backdate feature of wordpress 🙂

[30 DAY HABITS] 083. Meditate daily

Posted in 30 Day Habits at 7:58 am by Heather

I was trying to do these 30 day challenges once a month, but last month’s got off kilter, and I’ve gotten started late this month on my next challenge.  That being said, I already know what NEXT month’s challenge is going to be (Hello November, can we say NaNoBloPo? The hard part will be deciding WHICH blog to post on for 30 days…)

In any case, this month’s goal is to mediate daily [not mediate as in negotiations, of course].  I used to do this much more regularly, as I started in 2005 with a meditation class at a good friend’s metaphysician (whom I’ve been going to ever since, and it’s wonderful).  However, with all my moves in the last years, I’ve gotten out of this habit, which is truly a shame.

My metaphysician, donna, made a meditation cd which has a 12 minute guided meditation.  12 minutes also happens to be the amount of commercials in a standard 1 hour TV show, hence the length – it’s something we all should be able to fit in our day.  I’ve ripped the meditations to mp3 and am currently on day 3 of 30 and WOW, have I missed this.  Meditating just makes me a little calmer, a little happier and a little more peaceful.

[30 day challenge] 076. Declutter house (15 min/day)

Posted in 30 Day Habits at 9:51 am by Heather

This challenge was actually a lot harder than I had expected, despite the visual progress I could see.

I managed to get up to 23 days, and then went to Ohio to visit Cedar point; it’s hard to declutter when you are out of town.  And when I got back, the next day I didn’t want to do anything at all.  And as we all know, once you skip the first class of college, it just gets easier to keep skipping.  And then I got the flu (or that’s what I think it might have been), and was not up for doing much of anything but sleeping and well, sleeping.

So I will try and finish off the remaining 5 days at least, but I’m not sure this has become a habit like intended when I wrote this up.  I’ve gotten through my office, my dining room, living room, and bedroom (minus the closet).  I’m really not sure why it got harder and harder to complete as I went on, but it did.  When things are clean, I have less of a reason/excuse to procrastinate.

I’ve still got the kitchen, bathroom and closet that can really use some decluttering, so we’ll focus on the first two for the remaining 5 days.  Maybe I’ll find Wrigley’s 30 ft training leash in the process.
